...stepping down again. Not too shocking. Here's the biggest kicker: I guess this means Dan Mullen will be the next head coach at Florida. This sucks for my Dawgs, as I was fully expecting us to make a run at him after the 2011 season (when Richt will either be forced out or will take a page out of Meyer's book and resign). Now that Mullen is likely off the Dawgs' head coaching wish list, who is next?
Not saying Richt should be fired, I just like to think ahead. Be prepared, so they say.
ReplyDeletehaha...Charlie Strong at UL, Peterson at Boise, Malzahn at AU, Patrino at Illinois
ReplyDeleteAlso, the guy at Uconn
ReplyDeleteFor FL or UGA?
ReplyDeleteUGA
ReplyDeleteMaybe Peterson or Malzahn's worth a look. No to everyone else.
ReplyDeleteAs for Florida, the six most likely targets to replace Meyer:
ReplyDelete1. Mullen
2. Stoops
3. Peterson
4. Harbaugh
5. Whittingham
6. Strong
Hearing a lot of people mentioning Petrino. Can't imagine him wanting to further damage his reputation, but at this point - what does he care?
ReplyDeleteOn the flip side, I imagine this hire would probably get some opposition from some of the Florida alums and boosters, due to his reputation.
Of course, his reputation may seen worse to me as a Georgia and fair-weather Falcons fan. And you can't deny that he is a good college football coach. Not to mention, Florida has had its share of ruthless, d-bag coaches.
Two of my buddies, Chodawg and Highschooler, seem to think Petrino is a possible, if not likely, first-choice candidate for UF. I'm seeing much of the same from some bloggers, writers and tweeters. So maybe he belongs on the list.
I still think this would cause some dissension among Florida fans. I've seen two people comment that they wouldn't support their team anymore if Petrino was their coach, even though they are alums and huge fans.
But it an interesting possibility. I guess he belongs on the above list, though I'm not sure where.
He would be an excellent villain for Georgia fans, and give us even more reason to dislike Florida. It would be interesting.
Many people, including Chodawg, have Malzahn going to Arkansas in the event Petrino bolts for Florida.
Interesting fact: Since Petrino's coaching career began in 1983, he's never stayed in one place any longer than 4 consecutive years (Louisville head coach). I imagine the Florida faithful wouldn't be too concerned with this, as UF is a pinnacle job at the college level, and the NFL didn't work out too well for him.
Interesting...
I am pretty sure Malzahn is on the record as saying that Arkansas is one of his dream jobs.
ReplyDeleteI think Petrino would fit in perfectly with Spurrier and Meyer as the villians of College Football, especially in the South. I also think it would be a brilliant move because he is MUCH more proven than Mullen and is arguably a better offensive mind than Mullen or anyone else in the Nation.
Florida has said they want to make a decision by Christmas, which could play into Petrion as well, as more "ethical" coaches would have a problem leaving their team during preparation for the bowl season, however, I think we all know Petrino would have no such problem.
